PLACES YOU WANT TO GO IF YOU’RE BORED
The best place to make a phone call is the phone center on Republic Square. Open 24 hours a day, very low rates, private booths. It’s on the same side of the square as the Marriott Hotel Armenia and is in a set of buildings that includes the Post Office.
Do not pay more than 1,500 to get anywhere in town. Always ask how much it is in advance. Most taxis now charge by the kilometer, and are metered but can quote you a rate ahead of time. 100 dram per kilometer is standard, and there will usually be a minimum. Metered cars are best, try Taxi Alex 20-90-90
The most professional service that offers 24 hour turn around is Selena Service, located on Zakian Street, around the corner from the Marriott Hotel Armenia. Facing the hotel, walk to the right up the street and turn left at the first corner. It’s at the end of the street, on the right hand side. Ask about their pick-up and delivery service. Main – 536-508, Pick up and delivery - 397-330
There are numerous and they all carry a different variety of items. SAS Market is open 24 hours a day on the corner of Mashtots and Amirian. Worth the front door delivery service for 300 drams per order. They also have employees that speak English. 563-399 or 538-888.
Another market is Star Market on Amirian between Republic Square and Mashtots. Nice selection, friendly service, limited English and cheaper than SAS.
The best place to buy trinkets and souvenirs is the “Vernisage”. Located just off the main square, it is only open on Saturdays and Sundays. But beware, some items are made commercially, not necessarily in Armenia. Also, the “Art Vernisage” at the corner of Moscovian and Saya Nova across from the opera in Saryan Park. Paintings only and a nice spot to wander
For REALLY nice things visit Treasures of Armenia on Abovian near the square, but be prepared to pay. They’ve developed an exclusive line of all Armenian made products. Very high quality items, but also high priced.
Shawerma - That’s right, this now gets a category of it’s own!
Tumanian Shawerma – This is the original Shawerma stand, just in a new location. Much bigger selection of meats. Yum! On Tumanian between the Opera and Abovian street, but across the street from their original location. Tumanian
Tumanian Shawerma – This is the new guy in town that went into the old Tumanian Shawerma location . Confused? That was the idea. Good, but not as good as the original competition across the street. 19 Tumanian 520-781

Mr. Gyro – And new to the competition is the greek gyro entry. A nice change, good fries, cheap meal. Located right next to Ai Leoni, take the stairs down. How convenient, it’s the same owner! Small location, slow service, don’t expect it to be really fast food. Total non-smoking establishment. 40 Tumanian Street

Varied menu and creative dishes. Owner is part of Narek.com, so he also has a gift shop on site. They also deliver, but pizzas only. 40 Tumanian Street. 531-361
Griar Restaurant – Newest of the new. Rooftop dining on the 5th and 6th floors! A basement, but don’t eat there, it’s not as fun. Classical music in the evenings, and the 6th floor holds 32. Good food, great view, nice ambiance. Just down from Republic Square at the Corner of Zakian & Amerian, brand new building 548-652
Getap Restaurant – Down in the Hrazdan gorge. Better than most of the standard “kabob” restaurants, plus fresh lavash made on site. Just past Miracle restaurant when traveling down into the gorge from the “bridge” side.
Parvana – Down in the Hrazdan gorge. Food is still better at Getap, but this place is more fun. Dancing lots of entertainment. Their music annoys me nightly. Also a fireworks show, everynight at 10. First one you come to when traveling down from the “bridge” side.

Eastern Cuisine – Located farther up in the suburbs. More US style Armenian food. It’s also referred to as AREVYELIAN KHOHANOTS. Unfortunately, there are two restaurants with this name, make sure it’s the one on Komitas. 16 Komitas Avenue 271-620 delivery

Dragon Restaurant on Moskovyan across from Saryan Park (art vernisage) – The best Chinese food I’ve had anywhere and my current favorite restaurant. Restaurant Rossini – Hotel Yerevan – Located in the Hotel Yerevan, it has a fine selection of authentic Italian dishes. Hotel and restaurant are owned by an Italian investment company along with the Hotel Congress. 14 Abovian Street, 589-400
Yerevan is filled with cafés. Open from May 1st until October 31st, the season is nice and long. The best place to see and be seen is the café at the Marriott Hotel Armenia. But it’s definitely not the best we’ve got to offer. There are lots of nice cafés around the opera, the best is Jazzve, with great desserts, coffee and teas. VIP section is really comfortable. Try the crepes with ice cream and hot fudge sauce. They’re also on Moscovian and Tumanian. Wander around opera park, they’re all nice.
